Arizona Community College Expands With New Life Sciences Building

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Glendale Community College officials kicked off construction in August of a new $20 million life sciences building, which is slated to be the first three-story structure on campus.

The 63,000-square-foot facility, designed by Gould Evan Associates, of Phoenix , will house the school’s biology, nursing and psychology departments and will provide room for about 300 students.

Features include nine standard labs, an animal lab, nursing observation pods, a large amphitheater, meeting rooms, a small café and a greenhouse. Space will also be provided for 72 faculty offices.

The building is designed to contain green construction, such as drought-resistant plants, a stormwater management system and recycled carpet. A living wall of plants will surround student and faculty diners in the café.

Construction of the life sciences facility was funded by voter-approved bonds and is scheduled to be completed by January 2009. Phoenix-based DPR Construction is serving as general contractor.
