Modus Wins $8M Contract For Eco-Classrooms

ALBERTA, Canada — Alberta-based manufacturer Modus was awarded a $8 million contract to supply the province’s schools with 50 new environmentally friendly modular classrooms.

Modus’ new modular classrooms LEED Silver certified and meet the Canada’s new building specifications to promote sustainability and environmental compliance.

“As a corporate philosophy, Modus has embarked on the time-consuming and costly progression toward gaining LEED certification for its modular structures,” President and CEO of Modus, John Verhagen says. “As a direct result, Modus is now able to manufacture the first LEED Silver modular classrooms of its kind in Canada.”

The Modus classrooms are built with 80 percent recycled steel, according to company officials. They feature large windows to allow for natural light, occupancy light sensors and low-flow plumbing fixtures. The classrooms also include carbon dioxide to adjust ventilation as needed.

The walls, floor and ceiling of the modules are made with structural insulated panels that are durable and provide thermal efficiency, officials say. The classrooms are completely assembled by Modus and shipped to the site ready to use.
