School Construction News toured Assa Abloy’s state-of-the art testing lab, manufacturing plant and innovation showroom at the company’s Americas division headquarters in New Haven, Conn.

Assa Abloy manufacturers mechanical locks and hardware, electromechanical and electronic locks, doors and frames, access control, secure identity and issuance, and entrance automation.

Some of the company’s latest life-safety technologies include improvements to emergency egress with devices that emit audible and visual alerts to guide occupants directly to building exits; hurricane and tornado-resistant doorways, and MicroShield antimicrobial coating for doors and hardware.

Advancements in security technologies include keypad locks, mechanical locks and keys, offline locks and electronic cylinders with audit trail functions, campus security locks in offline, IP and WiFi configurations, doorway components (lock, power operator, electric strike, credential reader, switch) that can connect, communicate and continuously relay their status to a security network.

The company’s sustainable building includes products with low VOC emissions, sound transmission control. Recycled and rapidly renewable materials and energy-efficiency and thermal performance.

The Product Innovation Testing Lab tests products for Assa Abloy Americas companies for strength and impact, mechanical cycling, electrical and electronic cycling, environmental factors, and abuse. The company tests for regulatory certification including ANSI/BHMA and UL/cUL standards; research and development, production quality assurance and benchmarking versus competitors.

The Innovation Showroom includes fully-functioning models and design demonstrations including full-size door openings. The company also has a Mobile Innovation Showroom, which is a travelling version of the larger display in New Haven.
