NYU to Open Campus in D.C.

WASHINGTON — Contractors broke ground on a 12-story, 75,000-square-foot mixed-use building in for New York University’s first satellite campus in Washington, D.C., providing students a domestic option to studying abroad.

The Constance Milstein and Family Academic Center, which the Washington-based Hickok Cole Architects designed, will include space for classrooms and seminar rooms, a 200-seat auditorium, support staff, lobbyists, and five floors of student dormitories. NYU’s first "study away" campus, scheduled for completion by the fall of 2012, will offer classes through the private university’s College of Arts and Sciences.

"We view the NYU-D.C. center as an integral part of NYU’s global network university," says Richard Foley, a professor of philosophy and dean of the faculty of arts and science at NYU. "[NYU] is committed to a vision of a university in which students and faculty move easily from one center to another. A NYU student in politics, for example, might study not only in New York City but also in Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, Buenos Aires and D.C."

Up to 150 undergraduate students per semester are expected to attend the center. These students will participate in internships offered by local nonprofits, government agencies, and companies. Additionally, the new campus will provide a gathering space for NYU’s faculty members living in the D.C. area.
