Middle School Gears Up for Renovations

CLINTON, Miss. — Renovation work at Summer Hill Junior High School will begin in January, Clinton District Officials announced today. The $2.7 million project is slated for completion by September 2011.

The district’s $23.5 million bond issue will fund $400,000 of the project while a Qualified School Construction bond offered through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will cover the rest of the project costs.

The district hired Sumrall-based C. Perry Construction Co. earlier this month to oversee the renovations. Improvements to the campus will include separating the school’s current entrance and exit into two separate driveways – one for buses and one for cars – adding an additional entrance and exit at the building’s mid-point, adding a brick breezeway to the front of the building, replacing windows and the HVAC system, upgrading the gymnasium area and installing improvements to the floor, windows and locker room, consolidating the administrative area, converting one of the administrative offices into a classroom and renovating the restrooms.

Most of the work will take place at night or during weekends but some will also be done during class time.

Sumner Hill, located on Northside Drive, only ninth-graders, while the district’s Clinton High houses tenth through twelfth grade. Both schools hold the Department of Education’s “star” school designation.
