FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason University (GMU) broke ground this summer on a new $73 million health sciences building to debut in 2017. The 160,000-square-foot Academic VII/Research III building is part of GMU’s ongoing strategic plan, which includes renovating several academic buildings.
EVANSDALE, W. Va. — West Virginia University’s Evansdale campus opened the doors to the new advanced engineering research building for the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources on Oct. 1. The building features learning spaces and laboratories where students and faculty can “come together to solve the technical problems of today and tomorrow,” Gene Cilento, Glen H. Hiner dean of the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, said in a statement. The university has high hopes for the new engineering center.
The Endurex 555 from Nudo Products is a new, high-impact hurricane panel. Despite the popular use of steel in protective panels, Nudo has developed a new lightweight composite that outperforms its steel predecessors. The lightweight composite is also completely resistant to moisture and has a perfect balance. While the Endurex 555 is not as thick as its steel counterpart, Nudo has developed a proper insulation value in order to account for its thinness.
Tom Marquardt, SBID, IIDA, has recently been hired in HDR’s Chicago office as a design principal. A veteran in the industry with 29 years of experience, Marquardt comes to HDR after leading his own successful interdisciplinary design and branded environments studio in Chicago, which he founded in 1988. Prior to that, he worked for two firms designing corporate and commercial interior projects ranging from office test fit plans to high-end showrooms.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Pennsylvania State University officials are currently seeking options to renovate or replace the university’s famous Beaver Stadium in the next 10 years.
The stadium currently has an official seating capacity of 106,572, making it the second largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. Some parts of the stadium date back to 1909. Its size and long-standing history in college football attract thousands of visitors each year; however, the stadium has become antiquated.
BOTHELL, Wash. — The University of Washington (UW) Bothell and Cascadia College (both located in Bothell) celebrated the grand opening of the new 36,000-square-foot Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) on Oct. 7. The $22 million facility was jointly funded using student activity fees from both institutions and is anticipated to become the hub of student life on the institutions’ shared Bothell campus.
