200-Year-Old Quaker Prep School Gets Major Makeover
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Construction is under way on an $11 million renovation of the 200-year-old West Middle House at Moses Brown college and preparatory school.
The extensive renovation to the three-story building, which sits at the heart of the college’s 33-acre campus, will provide classrooms, faculty offices and communal spaces for each of the middle school’s three academic teams.
Renovation work on the historic building, which also houses the school’s central cafeteria, will focus on selective demolition of interior spaces. The project will involve masonry restoration, complete fireproofing of the structure and the installation of new food-service equipment. Entrances and windows will be replaced and new plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems will be installed.

Managed by Boston-based Shawmut design and construction in conjunction with New York design firm Rhinebeck Architecture, it is the first such project undertaken since the building’s construction in the early 1800s, officials say. The West Middle House project is part of a $25 million multi-year renovation and construction master plan.
Founded in 1794, Moses Brown is one of the oldest independent schools in the United States. The school has an enrollment of almost 800 students from nursery through 12th grade.
