Charter Builders and SpawMaxwell Now Under Balfour Beatty Name

DALLAS — Two Texas-based companies, Charter Builders of Dallas and SpawMaxwell of Houston, will now be known collectively as Balfour Beatty Construction.

Charter Builders has been working with Balfour Beatty since 2006 and SpawMaxwell has been working with the company since 2009. Now the two companies will join Balfour Beatty under one name and operate together throughout the country.

“You can’t go where you want to go if you stay where you are,” said Robert Van Cleave, Chairman and CEO of Balfour Beatty Construction. “We’ve been in the fortunate position to be able to grow in a period of tough times. One of the reasons this growth strategy has worked is our firm commitment to a clear and distinct vision for all of the businesses within Balfour Beatty Construction.”

Balfour Beatty is a leader in commercial construction and has been named as a ‘Top 10 Green Builder’ by Engineering-News Record as well as listed on the ‘Top 100 Companies to Work For’ by Fortune Magazine.

SpawMaxwell, an interior construction company has been recognized in Texas since 1998 with major commercial and healthcare projects totaling more than 40 million square feet. They serve a strong presence in the Houston area.

Charter Builders specializes in commercial, government, criminal justice, public assembly, sports facilities, as well as significant work with K-12 and higher education projects.

Both Charter Builders and SpawMaxwell have worked together in the past and believe that local market collaboration is important for the success of the company. They worked on projects for Austin and Houston schools, including Pflugerville, Katy, Georgetown and Round Rock Independent School Districts.

The two companies will now come together and operate in Balfour Beatty’s base in the Dallas area, but the companies will not change the way they operate.

“That reputation and sentiment has not changed, but we are now speaking with a unified Balfour Beatty Construction voice,” said Steve Mechler, Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction in Houston.

Before coming on board under the Balfour Beatty name, both companies made significant strides in their respected businesses. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has twice named Charter Builders as Dallas’ ‘Contractor of the Year.’ SpawMaxwell also received the honor of ‘Contractor of the Year’ by a Texas construction magazine in 2009.

Along with the success of the company the employees at SpawMaxwell have applauded the company for the past ten years as the ‘Best Place to Work’ in Houston. Although the name is changing the quality of work will not be affected. Balfour Beatty is becoming larger and stronger with the partnership of these two powerhouse companies.

Since the unity of the two companies under one name, Charter Builders has brought over 142 employees and SpawMaxwell an additional 152 — joining the employees already at Balfour Beatty, the company now employs a total of 2,400 people.

“More than just a name change, the rebranding signifies a shared commitment to bringing more of what we do best in each core geography to a broader segment of clients across Texas,” said Doug Jones, Regional CEO for Balfour Beatty Construction.
