Tilt-Con to Build Charter School for Middle and High School Students

ORLANDO, Fla.-Tilt-Con Corp., a tilt-up concrete constructor, has been awarded the contract from James A. Cummings Construction, the general contractor, to build the new Miami Shores Charter School in Miami Shores, Fla.

Designed by Spillis Candela DMJM, the 55,000-square foot facility for middle and high school students will include two single-story buildings and one two-story building.

The school, which will also be used as a hurricane shelter, will be constructed entirely of concrete, utilizing tilt-up concrete construction married with pre-stressed concrete for a more durable facility. Tilt-Con’s responsibilities will include all foundations, slabs, tilt-up concrete panels, mezzanines and walkways.

The tilt-up construction process involves using mobile cranes to lift concrete wall panels, which are poured on site, into place. Tilt-up construction is becoming increasingly popular because the structures withstand hurricanes better than other materials, are more fire-resistant and require less heat and air conditioning according to Tilt-Con. Construction began in December.
