The School Construction News & Design Share Awards 2002

The School Construction News and Design Share Awards program, also sponsored by C/S Group, has been steadily growing in influence over the years, not only because it celebrates good school facility design, but also because it is a source of rich ideas, real innovation, and thoughtful reviews that strive to influence the creation of effective learning environments. Currently in its third year, the international award program is special this year because it includes an alternative learning category that yielded two of the top award winners. The alternative learning category allows for the consideration of projects that do not resemble schools as we know them, but are exciting places to learn nonetheless. Additional categories included elementary, secondary, and higher education facilities, and schools serving other grade configurations.

The competition received 85 project entries from 14 countries; reviewers wound up selecting 63 winners from around the world. Top awards went to 18 projects: eight Honor award winners and 10 Merit award winners. Additionally, 16 Citation awards were given and 29 projects received Recognized Value awards. A complete list of winners can be reviewed on page 31. All judging was anonymous and all projects were reviewed over the Internet-a small sampling of the rich exchange of ideas written during the review process follows:

"The [Harbor City International] project exemplifies the clear integration of learning and space."
-Jeff Lackney
"Spaces [in High Tech High] flow freely, are airy, and colorful, creating an agreeable and informal learning environment."
-Rodolfo Almeida
"Based on the view that we understand animal behavior far better than human behavior, I selected the Gorilla Zoo project as a thoughtful, understanding development of an educational program."
-Henry Sanoff
"Something special has been created [at Yeshiva Elementary] because the architecture is not just a lofty ideal unto itself, but a way to create a sense of joy and peace for the students and staff who live and work in the school."
-Prakash Nair

All project selections this year were made by a review team and not a jury because some of our most seasoned advisors, such as Henry Sanoff and Bruce Jilk, felt the word "juror" can be viewed negatively within the architectural community. A list of this year’s reviewers is on page 30.
