Virginia DOE to Offer Online Resource for School Safety

RICHMOND, Va. — The state Department of Education is offering a new online resource to help parents, teachers and administrators protect students and enhance school security.

The online tool, Safe Schools Information Resource, provides public access to school safety data and includes a tool for creating reports and school-by-school comparisons within the state system.

School officials, faculty and community members can view information about reported offenses, student offenders, non-student offenders and disciplinary outcomes from student offenses.

Users can track specific incidents and their outcomes, or general trends across multiple schools to identify local or statewide safety and security risks.

Developed by the education department and the Virginia Commonwealth University ‘s Center for School-Community Collaboration, the Internet tool is part of Prevention Through Information, a three-year, federally funded initiative designed to improve the ability of schools to mitigate potential security risks through prevention planning.
