Proposal Could Create Thousands of Jobs
LANSING, Mich. — A $1.6 billion proposal for new construction projects would create about 16,000 jobs but Michigan officials are unsure of what effects the plan would have on the economy, according to reports.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm introduced the proposal to include funding for new buildings at the University of Michigan’s three campuses and three universities in the Upper Peninsula. The plan does not include any projects at 14 other campuses.
University of Michigan officials say the plan would create about 16,000 construction jobs for the state, which would be a boost for the economy. However, some state legislators say the economic stimulus package would increase the state’s bond cap, or borrowing limit, which could hurt the economy.
