Contractor: $45 Million Cal Poly Pomona Project Competed Under Budget

POMONA, Calif. — Construction was completed on a $45 million expansion of the library at California State Polytechnic University Pomona under budget and on schedule, according to Rudolph and Sletten Inc., the general contractor on the project.

The 180,000-square-foot building designed by Carrier-Johnson Architects was completed within 22 months and below the guaranteed maximum price. The money saved was used to renovate an access road and the landscaping around the library.

The project included a four-story addition at the library and a renovation of its first three floors.

Rudolph and Sletten built temporary hallways through the construction zone so the library could remain operational and students could access an elevator to reach the fourth and fifth floors.

Rising enrollment led to the expansion of the library, which includes a research commons, a two-story grand reading room, 23 group study rooms, five group listening rooms and a 24-hour research lab. The interior renovation included wiring for updated computing and telecommunications technology and improvements in Americans with Disabilities Act access.

Cal Poly Pomona had some inside help, as well. Three of the people who worked on the project, Project Manager Vincent Ly, Senior Project Engineer Nareg Mouradian and Project Engineer Esteban Hernandez, are Cal Poly Pomona Construction Management graduates.
