Rhode Island School District Seeks Modernization
By Fay Harvey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Public School District (PPSD) recently broke ground on two transformative school construction projects that will improve learning opportunities for pre-K through 8th grade students. The projects stem from a district goal of increasing the percentage of students learning in high-quality schools from 5% to 100% by the year 2030. To achieve this vision, PPSD is implementing a first-of-its-kind $1 billion school facilities plan.
“Through collaboration among PPSD, RIDE and the City of Providence, we’re creating more 21st century schools that meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students,” said Angélica Infante-Green, Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) commissioner, in a statement. “Families have long called for transformational improvements to facilities, and we are answering those calls.”
Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School
The $55.2 million Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School broke ground on Dec. 20, and is an example of the PPSD’s districtwide vision for facility modernization. The new school will include dedicated areas for science, technology, engineering and math learning and instruction alongside spaces for enriching arts education.
“Today marks an exciting moment for our community as we break ground on the new Harry Kizirian School,” said Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley in a district statement. ”This project is more than just the construction of a new building—it’s a significant investment in our future. We are creating a modern learning environment where every student will have the resources they need to succeed.”
The new Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School will replace the 1960-built facility that was facing aging issues such as leaking roofs. The new building will bring elementary and middle school students into one space to ease their progression from early childhood through middle school environments while prioritizing community-focused learning. Sustainability and energy efficiency are also being addressed through the inclusion of renewable power sources.
The facility features a secure, renovated lobby with safer student-drop off areas as well as separate entrances for Pre-K-5 grades and 6-8 grades. There will be an exclusive playspace for Pre-K and Kindergarten students while a nearby recreation center integrates the community at large.
Funding for the Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School is supported by $45 million in state funding.
Frank D. Spaziano Middle School Construction
Another groundbreaking ceremony was held on Dec. 2 for the Frank D. Spaziano Middle School campus after a May 2022 approval. The project will transform the existing Spaziano Elementary School and Annex into a learning hub for pre-K-8 students. The $34.5 million school will support dual-language immersion for all grade levels and will feature cutting-edge environments for science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) to drive collaboration and innovation. Spaces dedicated to special education, media, technology integration and student wellness are also included. The structure uses biophilic design techniques and outdoor spaces with the goal of keeping students engaged.
“Breaking ground at Spaziano is a symbol of what is possible when leaders, educators, and the community come together and prioritize the needs of our kids,” said PPSD Superintendent Javier Montañez, Ed.D., in a statement. “Providence students deserve the best, and this new middle school campus will help unlock their potential while ensuring they have the tools to succeed in today’s world. We’re proud to be making progress in our mission to offer 100% of Providence access to a new or like new school to learn and thrive in.”
